Emerging and established songwriters in Anglophone West Africa are invited to register for the next edition of The Cookout Africa, a free masterclass with Grammy Award-winning musician Vincent Berry II, which will take place via Zoom on 18 May.

Now in its second year, the masterclass gives participating songwriters the opportunity to create a song in real time and contribute lyrics to locally created beats through a collaborative process.

The West Africa leg of the Cookout Africa Songwriting series is open to participants in Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, The Gambia and Sierra Leone, and will begin at 6pm WAT.

Berry has collaborated with international musicians, including J Cole, Akon, Ari Lennox, Babyface, Brandy and Chris Brown. The musician will share his experiences with participants, as well as go through creative writing, group function, reflective, peer learning and interaction, and practice activities.

The masterclass has been recently held in eastern and southern Africa. It forms part of the events heralding the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) at the Intra-African Trade Fair 2021 (IATF 2021) from 6 to 12 September 2021.

“This collaboration with IATF2021 will enable the creative industry of the future to continue to produce fresh, conscious and emotionally available content in a sustainable and cutting-edge manner,” the organisers said.

The workshop will also be held in Francophone Eastern, Central and Western Africa in June and North Africa in July.
